Solitude

The other day I went up to Devils Den State Park for some time alone. Just me and God. I couldn’t have gone on a better day. The weather was perfect!

  • Bible, journal, pen, camera, and water. That’s it.
  • The first 10-15 minutes of solitude are a little creepy for me. Honestly, I hate it but after a while I realize how much I need it and then I LOVE it.
  • Woodpeckers are really cool.
  • No one was around. It felt like I was the only one around for miles and miles. It was nice.
  • I laid down on a rock at an awesome overlook and vultures started circling me. So I hiked to a different spot.
  • Something keeps me from doing stuff like this consistently and I want to change that.
  • I love nature. I feel alive when I’m outside.
  • Arkansas is underrated. It’s so beautiful. (Arkansas flag wave)
  • I have a hard time just sitting. I process better when I’m walking.

Question (Dwight Schrute): When is the last time you got away and spent alone time with God? Think about it. Do it. You’ll be glad you did.

Stand Retreat

Just wanna show off this logo that Ayrton Sawatzky did for our fall retreat for Elevation.

Things I Learned On Vacation

We went on vacation to Destin, Florida with our good friends Jared and Hannah Bridges. Here are few things I learned:

  • Road trips with a 1 year old are a little bit different than when it was just Ashley and I.
  • Mac is like his daddy. We don’t like sand. He just stood there and cried.
  • The “Name Game” makes road trips better.
  • The ocean is crazy awesome. I love it.
  • I like vacationing with friends.
  • Don’t drive 63 in a 50 through Eudora, Arkansas.
  • Songs are more fun when you sing them with an asian accent or add the word “freakin” before occasional words.
  • Don’t ever drive through the night. It’s miserable.
  • Wherever you are be there. Life is short. God is good.

Symphony Series

We started a series at Elevation last Sunday night called Symphony. I talked about how we are saved by grace and not by works and how God’s love for us is unchanging. I wanted to pass a couple of the thoughts on to you about getting God’s grace.

Ephesians 2:8-9 “8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9not by works, so that no one can boast.”

*There is nothing you can do to make God love you more or make God love you less.

GETTING IT HELPS YOU WORK IT. Grace empowers works. It’s by accessing God’s grace that we are able to do things for God. Serve him, overcome sin, be a lover of people, etc.

IF YOU THINK IT’S CUZ YOU WORKED IT YOU DON’T GOT IT: If you think God loves you because you are good and disciplined and avoid sin then you may not understand grace. If you think you are loved because of what you do then you are your own God. You don’t need God, the cross, prayer, church, or anything other than yourself.

IF YOU TRY TO WORK AROUND IT YOU DIDN’T GET IT: If you are trying to do your own thing because you understand that God will love you anyway you don’t really get God’s grace. People that truly understand God’s love for them don’t want to do anything that is unpleasing to Him. Much like a perfect Father. We would never want to hurt our father who loves us so much.

YOU KNOW YOU GOT IT WHEN YOU CAN GIVE IT: When you understand God’s grace it’s easier for you to give it. If you have a hard time forgiving people then there is a good chance you don’t understand the forgiveness that God has given you. If you can’t be happy for others when good things happen to them. If you hold grudges and hold on to bitterness. If you are filled with jealousy and envy. Then maybe you  don’t understand how much has been given to you. But you know you truly get it when you can give it. When you can let someone off the hook. When you can love the unloveable. When you pray blessings on your enemies.

WHEN YOU GIVE IT OTHERS GET IT: God says in II Corinthians that those who get it become ambassadors of it. God shows himself through us so that others can see God in them. When you show others grace, they see God in you. People can know God through you!

Elevation Launch Night

We had our first service of the new semester on Sunday night. Here is a quick recap:

  • After taking four much needed months off during the summer it was refreshing to have a service again.
  • Over 600 students were there.
  • The worship team did a killer opener rendition of “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve. It even had an opera singer in it!
  • Biggest game of rock, paper, scissors I’ve ever seen. The winner got an elevation embroidered snuggie!
  • I talked about God’s grace.  There is nothing you can do to make God love you more or make God love you less. People were encouraged. It made me happy.
  • The after party was incredible. Very creative, aesthetically pleasing, games, food, rock band, and a VIP area for freshman. This was all done by our leaders. They did a great job!

My Leadership Principles #4

#4 LEAD FROM HUMILITY

Matthew 23:11-12 “11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

This verse is one that I try to always meditate on and apply in my life. Especially when I start thinking about going to the next level or being promoted or gaining more influence.

This word “exalt” means “to lift up” or “to raise to dignity.” It carries with it a meaning of earning respect and influence. No one followers proud leaders anymore.

I jotted down some things that seem to happen in people that follow you  when you lead from humility.

  • They will feel comfortable being honest with you.
  • They won’t talk bad about you.
  • They won’t let others talk bad about you.
  • They will publicly respect and honor you.
  • They won’t see a selfish agenda.
  • They will see God in you.

God promotes leaders that are humble. I want to be one of them.

My Leadership Principles #3

#3: LET OTHERS LEAD

It’s easy for leaders to dominate everything because they want things to be done perfectly. This is a no no and leads to major burnout. Very poor leadership. I’ve got to be honest though. I’ve been really weak on this one for a while but I’m changing it and it’s working!

It Creates Ownership In Others: We all want the people under us to be pumped up and excited but it won’t happen if they don’t feel needed. John Maxwell said if someone under you can do the job at least 80% as good as you then let them do it. This will create leaders that act like owners. They are now members of the family not hired hands.

More Stuff Gets Done: As leaders we want stuff to get done. A good sign is when there is stuff getting done and you didn’t even know about it. You didn’t even know it needed to be done and it’s getting done. That’s good leadership. For a leader to have to mentally keep up with everything that needs to get done is a disaster waiting to happen.

Relieves Pressure: The times where I’ve been diligent to trust my team, I’ve walked away feeling like a new man. Leaders don’t become great when they do everything! They become great when they get others to do their part!

Delegate Authority: Most of the time when we delegate we do it halfway. We just want people to do something we want done. It’s better to delegate authority because this creates leaders. Delegating tasks creates followers. Eventually we need to trust them to make the decisions.

Helps You Specialize: When daily operational stuff is out of your way then you can move on to focus on areas of greater strength for you. I used to do everything for the college ministry I’m a part of until I’ve now passed everything on to my right hand man. Now I’m focusing on communication, vision, networking, and meeting with leaders.

New Series

We are doing new series coming up called Sayings of the Wise. It’s a series of messages on the book of Proverbs and it will start on April 4th. A shout out to Ayrton Sawatzky for the graphic.
